At least 13 people were killed in a tragic road accident along the Ikare-Akoko/Owo Road in Ondo State on Saturday.
The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Akure, the state capital.
“FRSC regrets to inform the public of a fatal road traffic crash that occurred today, December 28, 2024, at Abule Panu before Ose Bridge on the Owo-Ikare highway.
The crash, involving two buses, claimed 13 lives, while one person was rescued with severe injuries,” the statement read.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around 10:14 a.m. when a bus traveling from the Ikare axis suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and collide head-on with another bus carrying fabrics from the Owo axis.
Both vehicles burst into flames upon impact.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the FRSC, police, and fire service, arrived promptly at the scene.
The injured survivor was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
Ibitoye urged drivers to maintain their vehicles and exercise patience on the roads.
He also called on passengers to speak out against reckless driving, emphasizing that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
