Senator Danjuma Goje, the chairman Senate committee on appropriation has blamed the delay in the passage of the 2017 budget on the raid of his house by the Police.
Speaking during plenary on Wednesday, April 26, 2017, Goje said the Police searched his house for four hours.
Senator Goje noted that the Police left with valuable items used by his committee while working on the budget.
“The Police searched my house for 4 hours,” Goje said.
“They left me, my family members and well-wishers traumatized and frightened.
“At the end of the raid, they left with N18 million; $19,000; 4000 Saudi riyal. The police also left with my laptop, 18 files from my office.
“The Police truncated work on 2017 budget by the invasion of my house. Nigerians should therefore blame the Police for the delayed passage of the 2017 budget.
“As I speak, have had no official contact with the police. I don’t know if the Police are now working on the budget. They have hijacked the budget.
“We will manage to pass this budget but don’t blame us if it is delayed,” Senator Goje added.
Senate President Bukola Saraki condemned the raid of Senator Goje’s residence.
“I have unconfirmed reports that it was a whistleblower who gave the Police the information,” Saraki said.
He called on the Police to produce the documents ‘openly’ same way they were taken.
A committee was also set up to investigate the circumstances surrounding the raid.
