Broadband Forum Distinguished Fellow and former chair of BroadbandHome joins NG-PON2 and GPON work
PETALUMA, CA – March 14, 2016 – Calix, Inc. (NYSE: CALX), the world leader in enabling service providers to deliver a gigabit experience to their subscribers, today announced that marketing director Greg Bathrick has been named Work Area Director of the Broadband Forum’s Fiber Access Networks Work Area. With a mission that includes defining best practices and enabling revenue-generating services for service provider networks, the Broadband Forum has been a key organization in the proliferation of broadband networks and the improvement of the broadband experience for subscribers around the world. The Fiber Access Networks Work Area focuses on defining the requirements for fiber network architectures leveraging NG-PON2 and other PON technologies in order to accelerate service provider deployments and ensure interoperability across the vendor ecosystem.
“The Fiber Access Networks Work Area is an important group within the Broadband Forum as we see the exponential growth of fiber networks throughout the world,” said Robin Mersh, Broadband Forum CEO. “As next-generation PON technologies come to market later this year and into 2017, this Work Area will have a major impact on accelerating adoption of these technologies. Since Greg has been a key contributor to the Broadband Forum through his work with the TR-069 specification in the BroadbandHome working group, we are confident he will be a great addition to the Fiber Access Networks team.”
The Broadband Forum’s Fiber Access Networks Work Area is currently working on several next-generation PON technologies and applications. Active projects include NG-PON2 wavelength management, PON-based mobile backhaul, and architectural and functional requirements for complex GPON deployments in the context of the Broadband Forum TR-178 specification. Each of these works will allow service providers to lower costs, improve subscriber experience, and accelerate their time to market by providing an optimized uniform network framework.
Greg’s initial work with the organization began in 1997. He has chaired the BroadbandHome working group and served on the board of directors. He was named a Broadband Forum Distinguished Fellow in 2011, as one of only 13 members ever to be honored with the title. Distinguished Fellow titles are given to members who have provided a major influence on the direction and success of broadband development over a period of time. In addition to Greg’s work with the Broadband Forum, Calix principal systems test engineer Martin Casey was honored with the Broadband Forum’s Circle of Excellence Award in 2015 for his work on G.fast and VDSL2 test plans.
“For many years, Calix has been at the forefront of defining fiber access technologies through our extensive work around GPON, XGS-PON, and NG-PON2 standards with the FSAN,” said Shane Eleniak, vice president of product line leadership at Calix. “Through the Broadband Forum and Greg’s work, we go beyond the standards definitions and work on areas directly affecting subscriber experience like the service delivery processes and management of the network.”
