Stephen Worgu was the ‘star’ of the 2008 CAF Champions League scoring 13 goals despite his club, Enyimba exiting at the semis. The Nigerian forward will later land a mega move to Sudanese giants Al-Merrikh, but his four years with the Omdurman-based club was nothing near success.
Early this year, the striker crossed carpet to the other side of Omdurman, joining bitterest rivals, Hilal. He tells Cafonline.com about his stint with Merrikh and new life with Hilal in the Orange CAF Champions League.
Cafonline.com: What happened after your mega move to Merrikh?
Stephen Worgu: I signed a four-year deal, went on loan in 2010 [Ahly Benghazi of Libya] before returning for the second halve of my third season. In my fourth year, I couldn’t play due to injuries. I had always wanted to do my best for Merrikh, but injuries ensured it was otherwise. It was a difficult moment for me and I have put that behind me to move on in life.
How come you accepted to join no other club than Hilal, bitterest rivals of Merrikh?
I never expected such a move, but I accepted it to come and prove my critics wrong. I have an unfinished business in sudan and I thank the management of Hilal for this opportunity. Hopefully, I will pay back their confidence in me with results on the pitch.
How do you feel to don the colours of both Merrikh and Hilal?
I feel good and it is also a new challenge. To play for the two biggest clubs in sudan is no mean feat. I consider myself lucky as well.
Are you looking forward to your first game against your former club Merrikh?
I have a great deal of respect for the fans of Merrikh and the club as a whole. I remain grateful for their support during my stay with them. I have even had some Merrikh fans wish me well on social media platforms regarding my move to Hilal. I will always show respect even if I score against Merrikh in my first game.
Hilal held Stade Malien to a barren draw in Bamako. What does that result mean to the second leg?
We stand a good chance to reach the next round. We are a team with character and with players who have experience at this level. I believe we can scale through. For now, our target is the mini-league stage and we are working towards it.
What do you make of Hilal’s chances in the CAF Champions League?
I hope to give my best to help our chances. The competition is always difficult. Hilal is a big club with an ambition each year of going farthest. The club has reached the semis a couple of times, and I hope we can go beyond that this time.
In 2008, you were top scorer in the CAF Champions League, what personal targets have you set for this season?
It’s been a while now. My priority is helping my club achieve its target. After, I can think of other things.
