(National Planning Commission News) – The House of Representatives has expressed commendation to the Supervising Minister of National Planning, Bashir Yuguda, who is also the Minister of State for Works, for his unusual mastery of the technicalities of economic planning, having been on the saddle for ony few months.
The members of the House of Representatives made this known during a budget defence session conducted by the House Committee on National Planning and Poverty Alleviation at the National Assembly recently.
Speaking at the event, the House Committee Chairman on National Planning and Poverty Alleviation, Bethel Amadi stated that the Committee was elated with the level of commitment and competence displayed by the Minister during the few months of service in the ministry.
He said: “I want to thank you for your very good example at the National Planning Commission. My colleagues have noted that within a short time you have shown a very clear understanding not just at the ministry of works where you are, but of the entire government processes. I congratulate you and would like to reiterate that we are ready to work with you because of the importance of national planning to the nation’s growth and development. Our people are yearning for it, the country needs it. We need to plan for the future. If you fail to plan, you then plan to fail,” he averred.
He explained that the House of Representatives is working on some key legislative components, including the Mandatory National Planning Bill to ensure project continuity as a means of empowering the National Planning Commission and its parastatals, adding that his colleagues have also disagreed with the envelope system of revenue allocation.
Speaking earlier, a Reps Committee member, Ibrahim Shehu Gusau commended Yuguda for cultivating a quick grasp of what planning entails.
“I am passionate about planning. Some years ago, I used to be a commissioner for planning. I can tell you that you learnt fast,” he observed.
Gusau also noted that the House of Representatives is ready to work with the Minister to enable him achieve his mandates. Other Committee members who spoke at the event include: Razaq Bello-Osagie and Nkoyo Toyo, who described the Minister’s work at the National Planning Commission as germane to development as well as imbued with a sense of utility and value.
