Governor Uduaghan has reiterated the continuous pursuit of the State Government’s policy in using the three-point agenda to eradicate hunger, health diseases, ignorance, joblessness and effectively create a ‘Delta Beyond Oil’ initiative.
Dr. Uduaghan made the statement at the Exhibition and Certificate Award Ceremony of Delta State Economic Reintegration Programme (DESERP) asserting that every Deltan needed to be integrated into the economy of the State in pursuit of creating a ‘Delta Beyond Oil’ initiative, adding that the greatest asset in the State are the people who need to be given opportunities to develop themselves fully in every skill.
The Governor who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN) noted that DESERP is a suggestion by his administration to train Deltans who were excluded from the economic opportunities of the State, adding that Government is making every effort to give hope to the hopeless, skill to the unskilled and employment to the unemployed in Delta State by providing technical support for this great program.
He noted that with DESOPADEC as sponsors of the programme and an interventionist agency receiving 60% of the revenue to develop the oil-producing communities, one of its primary aims is to develop the youths, women and men ready to acquire skills, asserting that it is an all-round programme intended to give everyone the opportunity to acquire one skill or another to set up their own businesses.
The Governor, expressed satisfaction over the 2,700 participants being given certificates of award, adding that with the 12,000 participants duly trained on being self-employed, they have become employers of labour and more jobs will be created.
The Honourable Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu, who was a special guest, said that in a country like Nigeria, to be self-reliant, there is need for Government to diversify the economy and encourage the people to be self-employers of labour through skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programmes like DESERP.
Chief Wogu commended the State Governor for the giant strides in developing the State, and noted that DESERP provides opportunity for interested Deltans to acquire a wide range of skills which they can productively utilize to improve their standard of living.
