The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced its readiness to conduct rerun elections in some parts of Enugu State on February 3, as ordered by the Appeal Court.
Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu ahead of the polls.
The rerun elections are scheduled for Udenu/Igbo-Eze North Federal Constituency and Enugu South Urban State Constituency, respectively, following the Appeal Court’s directive.
The REC stated that the elections would cover 25 Registration Areas, comprising 173 polling units. Additionally, he mentioned that for the Enugu South Urban State Constituency, there would be a rerun in eight polling units with discrepancies.
Dr. Chukwu emphasized that for the Udenu/Igbo-eze North Federal Constituency, which includes Udenu and Igbo-eze North LGAs, elections would be conducted in 55 polling units in Udenu LGA and 110 polling units in Igbo-eze North LGA.
He noted, “Working under the court’s order, which specified 90 days for the rerun elections, the commission has fixed February 3 for the exercise.
We are prepared and have made necessary arrangements for a smooth and inclusive rerun election.
That is the essence of this important stakeholders’ meeting.”
Dr. Chukwu also confirmed that non-sensitive materials are currently available in INEC offices across the involved LGAs.
