Mr. Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has revealed his intention to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He made this announcement amid a call for party reform within the PDP.
Sowunmi, who expressed disappointment with the PDP’s leadership, urged his colleague and former Atiku campaign spokesman, Daniel Bwala, to reserve a spot for him in the APC, indicating his readiness to leave the PDP.
Bwala, on his part, had previously declared his support for President Bola Tinubu after a visit to the Presidential Villa.
Sowunmi justified his potential defection to the APC by criticizing the PDP’s lack of reform efforts. During a Twitter discussion on the topic of “PDP leadership and the role of opposition in democracy,” he questioned whether he should continue criticizing President Bola Tinubu more than he had previously done and whether he should intensify his opposition to him.
He referenced the party’s history, noting that former members like the president in 1999 and President Jonathan, who once famously mentioned not having shoes, had left the party. Despite this, Sowunmi expressed his commitment to the PDP but emphasized the need for reform.
He concluded by requesting Bwala to keep a place for him in the APC, suggesting his readiness to switch parties if the PDP does not embrace reform.
Sowunmi’s potential defection to the APC highlights the growing discontent within the PDP and the shifting political landscape ahead of the upcoming elections.
