The Supreme Court has put an end to the legal battle over the Ogun State governorship election by dismissing the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu.
In a unanimous decision, the court rejected the appeal brought by the PDP and Adebutu, ruling that it lacked merit.
Justice Tijani Abubakar, delivering the lead judgment, dismissed the petition.
The court also refused the plea by Adebutu and the PDP to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections in 99 polling units where they claimed elections were canceled.
The Supreme Court disagreed with the allegations of election cancellation in these units.
Instead, the court affirmed the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, stating that they were lawfully declared winners of the March 18 election by INEC.
Justice Abubakar criticized the documents presented by the appellants, stating that they were “worthless papers” lacking in evidential value due to the absence of proper headings, dates, signatures, or names of officials.
This decision by the Supreme Court upholds the findings and conclusions of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, both of which had earlier dismissed the petition for lack of merit.
With this ruling, Dapo Abiodun remains the duly elected Governor of Ogun State.
