The Labour Party (LP) in Kaduna State has clarified that the recent appointment of Nenadi Usman as the National Caretaker Chairman of the party is in line with the conclusion of Barrister Julius Abure’s tenure.
This move aims to ensure the party’s continuity and effectiveness as it navigates a critical leadership transition.
In a statement issued on Saturday by Mr. Yusuf Solomon Danbaki and Sani Sahabi, Chairman and Secretary of the State Labour Party Interim Committee, the party highlighted the need for unity and acceptance of the new leadership to maintain the momentum and relevance of the party.
The statement read: “It is important to clarify that the tenure of Barrister Julius Abure and all his appointees ended on June 9, 2024.
The rejection of Nenadi Usman’s appointment appears to stem from a reluctance to accept this reality.”
The statement emphasised that the appointment of Nenadi Usman was not arbitrary but a decision facilitated by Governor Alex Otti and supported by key figures within the party, including the former presidential candidate Peter Obi, members of the national and state assemblies, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and other critical stakeholders such as the gubernatorial candidates forum.
This broad endorsement underscores the widespread consensus and collective effort to stabilise the party during this transitional period.
Acknowledging the contributions of past leaders, the Labour Party extended its gratitude to Auwal Tafoki for his service as the former State Chairman, noting that the party’s progress depends on moving forward cohesively.
The statement stressed the importance of unity and cooperation among members, stating, “It is crucial for the party to move forward.”
The statement further highlighted the necessity of adapting to the new leadership structure, especially given the recent developments involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ceased all dealings with Barrister Abure and his appointees, making it imperative for the party to adapt and embrace the new leadership,” the statement explained.
This development has effectively underscored the need for the Labour Party to adjust swiftly to its new leadership to maintain its operational legitimacy and engagement with the electoral body.
The Labour Party leadership transition comes at a time when the party is striving to solidify its position as a formidable opposition force in Nigerian politics.
Under the outgoing chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, the party made significant strides, including gaining increased representation in the national and state assemblies.
However, as his tenure concluded, the party faced internal challenges that required a decisive and strategic approach to leadership renewal.
The appointment of Nenadi Usman as the National Caretaker Chairman is seen as a critical step towards addressing these challenges and fostering stability within the party.
Nenadi Usman, a seasoned politician with extensive experience in governance, is expected to bring her wealth of knowledge and leadership skills to bear in steering the party through this transitional phase.
Her appointment signals a commitment to inclusivity and strategic planning as the party gears up for future electoral contests.
The Kaduna State Labour Party’s statement also addressed the discomfort that often accompanies changes in leadership, urging members to embrace the new direction with an open mind.
“Change can be challenging to accept, but it is essential for the Labour Party to remain relevant and functional,” the statement added.
It emphasised the importance of aligning with the new leadership to ensure the party remains a significant player on the national stage.
In a call for unity, the statement urged all party members and stakeholders to rally behind Nenadi Usman and the newly appointed leaders.
“It is vital for the betterment of the party and its future in the country,” it concluded.
The Labour Party leadership in Kaduna State believes that with collective support and a unified front, the party can continue to advocate for its core values and advance its mission of representing the interests of the Nigerian people.
As the Labour Party navigates this critical juncture, the focus will be on reinforcing its internal structures, enhancing party cohesion, and preparing for future electoral challenges.
The endorsement of Nenadi Usman as the National Caretaker Chairman is a step towards achieving these goals, ensuring that the party remains a vibrant and effective voice in Nigeria’s political landscape.
Moving forward, the Labour Party’s success will depend on its ability to maintain unity, effectively manage transitions, and continue to advocate for the interests of the Nigerian populace.
The leadership and members are now tasked with demonstrating resilience and adaptability as they work together to build a stronger, more inclusive party that can effectively challenge the status quo and drive meaningful change across the nation.
