Only five political parties have registered to participate in the upcoming local government elections in Kwara State, scheduled for September 21, 2024.
These parties include the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Peoples Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Accord Party (AP).
This was revealed by Mohammed Baba Okanla, Chairman of the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC), during the 42nd edition of the Media Parliament organised by the Kwara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Ilorin on Wednesday.
Okanla also disclosed that over 21,000 unemployed individuals applied for ad hoc positions for the election. However, only around 7,000 applicants were selected.
The commission assured the public of its readiness to conduct the election smoothly across 2,887 polling units in the state’s 16 local government areas.
“The commission has carefully developed a timetable to ensure all stakeholders are well-prepared for the electoral process,” Okanla stated.
He added that polling units will open at 8 am and close by 3 pm, with immediate sorting, counting, and collation of results at designated centres.
Okanla highlighted the commission’s efforts to ensure the process is transparent and well-organised, including training for electoral staff and ad hoc workers.
KWASIEC is also collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the integrity of the voter register and the overall success of the election.
The commission has been working closely with security agencies to ensure the safety of lives and property during the elections.
