The Sokoto Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended 13 individuals suspected of internet fraud in Sokoto State.
The commission disclosed this development on Saturday, indicating a continued nationwide clampdown on cyber-related offences.
In a statement issued in Abuja, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale confirmed the arrests, which were carried out in the Gidan Yaro and Dandima areas of Sokoto.
According to Oyewale, the operatives acted on credible intelligence linking the suspects to various internet crimes.
“All 13 suspects are said to be students of Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto. They are currently under investigation, and once the process is complete, they will be charged to court,” the EFCC spokesman announced.
This operation is part of the agency’s sustained efforts to tackle the rising tide of internet fraud across Nigeria.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to bringing perpetrators of cybercrime to justice, warning that such activities will not be tolerated.
The crackdown on internet fraud, popularly referred to as ‘Yahoo Yahoo’, has been intensified in recent years by the EFCC, which regularly makes arrests of suspected fraudsters in various states.
The commission continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities, emphasising that the fight against cybercrime is critical to preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s digital space.
