The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) has announced that discussions have commenced with members of the United States government over the self-determination and liberation of Biafra.
Ekpa made this known in a statement shared via his official X handle on Monday, citing historical grievances, economic disparities, and socio-political marginalization by the Nigerian government as the driving forces behind Biafra’s push for independence.
According to Ekpa, over 50 million Igbos have participated in a self-referendum for Biafra’s secession, reflecting the overwhelming desire for self-rule.
He stressed that the recent consultations with U.S. congressmen are part of efforts to craft a new policy framework for Biafra’s cause on the global stage.
“The call for Biafra self-determination is deeply rooted in historical grievances, economic disparity, and socio-political marginalization; our struggle has become a struggle for the survival of the Biafran people,” Ekpa stated.
“For over 50 million Biafrans who have already voted in the ongoing self-referendum, the argument for leaving Nigeria is not just about identity but survival, peace, unity, equity, and progress.”
Ekpa noted that these engagements with U.S. lawmakers, including Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson and House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul, have garnered positive reception.
He emphasized that many congressmen were being introduced to the Biafra issue for the first time, underscoring the importance of filling the information gap in Washington, D.C.
“We have taken the Biafra Liberation to the global stage for the very first time since after the war. I will share with you some of the key outcomes of our recent meetings with U.S. Congressmen regarding the recognition of Biafra’s independence,” Ekpa stated.
He added, “The reception by members of Congress to our message has been overwhelmingly positive.
Not a single member of Congress we met with expressed support for the Nigerian government.”
Ekpa disclosed that there have been explicit commitments from U.S. lawmakers to support the Biafran cause, though the nature of this support may vary.
He hinted at ongoing initiatives being developed in collaboration with U.S. Congress members, with further details to be made public at the appropriate time.
BRGIE continues to position itself on the international stage, advocating for the recognition of Biafra’s independence and seeking diplomatic backing from key global stakeholders.
