United States President-elect Donald Trump is reportedly considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to The Guardian UK.
The newspaper cited four sources familiar with the transition plans, indicating that Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence from 2017 to 2021, is a potential candidate for the role.
Grenell’s appointment would position him to play a central role in the incoming administration’s efforts to mediate an end to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
While Trump is reportedly weighing the creation of a special envoy role to address the conflict, sources caution that no final decision has been made.
The President-elect may opt not to establish the position or could choose someone else for the role. Additionally, there is no certainty that Grenell would accept the appointment if offered.
During his campaign, Trump pledged to quickly resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict but has yet to outline specific details of his approach.
