Operatives of the Lagos Police Rapid Response Squad (RRS) have detained a 42-year-old suspected army impersonator accused of abducting and robbing a man of his valuables.
The RRS announced the arrest on its official X handle, @rrsLagos767, on Wednesday.
The suspect, identified as a dismissed army sergeant and ex-convict, was apprehended on Saturday under the Ikeja Bridge.
Victim Identifies Suspect
According to the RRS, the suspect was spotted by one of his victims near Computer Village, Ikeja. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect had on December 30, 2024, accused his victim of bumping into him and allegedly causing the loss of a gold ring.
“The suspect claimed to be an army officer and displayed a fake identification card to intimidate the victim,” the RRS stated.
The suspect reportedly threatened to take the victim to an army barracks in Oshodi unless the gold ring was produced.
Abduction and Robbery
RRS investigations revealed that the suspect invited an accomplice on a motorcycle and forcefully took the victim on the bike under the guise of heading to an army cantonment.
Instead, the victim was taken to the Third Mainland Bridge, where his iPhone 13 and cash were stolen before he was abandoned.
Further inquiries showed the suspect sold the stolen iPhone 13 for ₦150,000 at Computer Village, Ikeja.
Repeat Offender
RRS stated that the suspect had been arrested previously in 2024 in Ikeja for a similar crime and had served time in prison. A Nigerian Army cap and a fake identity card were recovered from him during the recent arrest.
The suspect has been transferred to the Commissioner of Police’s Special Squad for further investigation.
