TOKYO, Japan, September 9, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ — 1. On September 9, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (personal protective equipment provided by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government) to the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Republic of Liberia, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
2. Specifics and numbers of the items will be decided based on the local needs to be determined through a consultation with World Health Organization (WHO) etc.
3. The Ebola virus disease which was initially reported in the Republic of Guinea this March spread to the neighboring countries. As of August 31, 3,707 cases including suspected ones and 1,848 deaths were confirmed according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
4. In response to the request from the Government of the Republic of Sierra Leone and the Government of the Republic of Liberia, the Government of Japan has decided to provide emergency assistance from a humanitarian point of view as well as in light of friendly relations between these countries.
