The Mass Movement for Goodluck (MMG), a President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election support group, has described him as the most-friendly president with the South-East geo-political zone.
The group’s Director-General, Dr Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, made the assertion on Sunday at Afikpo, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi, while inaugurating the council’s branch of the group.
Ibe-Kalu, who was represented by his associate, Mr Hillary Egwu, said Jonathan was the only president who placed the Igbos in the political and social limelight after several years of deprivation.
“Jonathan is the only president among all, who has ruled Nigeria to appoint Igbo to strategic positions as the Chief of Army Staff and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).
“He ensured that the South-East zone enjoyed the aviation luxury by upgrading the Enugu airport to international status, initiating the construction of the second bridge across the River Niger.
“He has appointed Igbo people to other strategic positions and he will ensure that the zone gets an additional state to be at par with some zones in the country”, he said.
Ibe-Kalu noted that Jonathan was the official candidate of the party for the 2015 general elections, just like other support groups and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
“We have taken the campaign for his re-election to the hinterlands to mobilise Nigerians on the need to defend good governance and promote peaceful co-existence as symbolised by the president.
“Nigerians have every reason to vote for him to shame his detractors, who feel they can distract his administration through insurgency and related acts”, he said.
The State Coordinator of the group, Mr Godwin Obasi, said the body was in the area to urge the people to work hard in ensuring the re-election of the president in 2015 elections.
“Jonathan preaches the unity of the country and we are using this platform to urge the people to promote peaceful co-existence and shun acts that will divide the country.
“Jonathan’s re-election in 2015 will check ethnicity, religious bigotry, civil strife, nepotism, corruption and other ills that derail the socio-economic and cultural development of the country”, he said.
He called on the people to ensure they procured their permanent voters cards as it was the only tool to choose leaders of their choice during the elections.
The newly inaugurated Co-coordinator in the council, Dr Michael Oyari, thanked the group for choosing the council as the first to be inaugurated in the local government areas of the country.
“I and my executives, will work to mobilise the people to vote for the president in the 2015 general elections, to consolidate on his achievements in office”, he said.
Highlights of the occasion included the award of certificates of merit to the group’s board of trustees’ members and patrons. (NAN)
