The Labour Party has distanced itself from the recent statement credited to its National Secretary, Olukayode Ajulo, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to set up an inclusive government.
The opposition party described Ajulo’s comments as “his personal opinion”.
The National Chairman of LP, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, who disowned the party’s national scribe in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said LP had no reason to join any inclusive government of the governing All Progressives Congress.
According to him, the party has not met to take such position calling on the president to set up an inclusive government.
The LP chairman said, “The statement credited to our National Secretary is quite embarrassing and is taken very seriously by the LP. He spoke for himself; it is not the position of the party. For any policy statement of that nature to come out from the party, it must come from either the chairman or publicity secretary.
“There was no time the party decided through any of its organs to advise either the APC or President Muhammadu Buhari on what type of government it should operate or constitute.
“They have promised change, which we are yet to witness. So, we could not be given the impression as if we want to be part of their government. At any point in time at their campaign, they gave time of eradicating Boko Haram within weeks; but today, the problem of insurgency has become more complicated than how they met it.
“The LP has not seen anything worthwhile from the ruling APC that would warrant our call on it to set up an inclusive government. We have no business with any type of government they form. As of now, we have not seen any reason to call for or join any party in an inclusive government.
“We have not seen the direction of the government. If we are invited, we are a marketable political party and must make sure that we have input, we must present to them and be sure that they will appreciate our manifesto”.
