Abia South Senator, Enyinnaya Abaribe, has reiterated his readiness to stand as a guarantor for Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Abaribe made this declaration while addressing journalists after a visit to Enugu State Governor, Alex Otti. He also called on President Bola Tinubu to heed the advice of the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and other stakeholders advocating for Kanu’s release.
The senator emphasized that releasing Kanu would help address the escalating criminal activities in the Southeast region.
“I expect that the President will listen to his Attorney General and all of us who have been pushing for the resolution of issues in the Southeast.
The insurgency, the sit-at-home orders on Mondays, and other problems have been hijacked by criminals who use Nnamdi Kanu’s name to justify their actions,” Abaribe stated.
He expressed optimism that Tinubu, whom he described as a “listening President,” would consider the appeals from various quarters and act decisively to release Kanu.
According to Abaribe, Kanu’s release would restore normalcy to the Southeast and revitalize the region’s economic activities.
“So, we continue to call on President Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu. We are ready and willing to serve as guarantors for his release, which will allow the Southeast to regain its productive potential and rid the region of criminals, kidnappers, cultists, and other dangerous elements,” he added.
Kanu has remained in detention since June 2021, following his extraordinary rendition from Kenya to Nigeria.
Although the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordered his release, the Nigerian government has yet to comply with the ruling.
