The Abeokuta High Court on Wednesday sentenced 22-year-old Jamiu Malomo to death by hanging for the murder of a sex worker, Asisat Akande, following a dispute over payment.
The court heard that Malomo, who was 18 at the time of the incident, stabbed the deceased to death on July 18, 2021, around 9:30 p.m. in the Ori-Apata community, Oke-Aregba, Abeokuta.
Dispute Over Payment
According to the prosecution, Malomo picked Akande from a bar in the Panseke area and took her to his residence for sexual activity.
Their agreement was for a payment of ₦10,000, but Malomo only paid ₦8,000 after the act, refusing to settle the remaining ₦2,000.
The disagreement escalated, leading Malomo to stab Akande in the neck with a knife, resulting in her death.
Arrest and Prosecution
The convict was later arrested by the police at the 3AD Club in Panseke while attempting to pick up another sex worker.
The prosecution, led by Deputy Director of Public Prosecution, A.M. Adebayo, presented evidence proving Malomo’s guilt.
Adebayo stated that the crime violated Section 316 and is punishable under Section 319 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State 2006.
Judgment
Justice O. Ogunfowora found Malomo guilty of murder, stating that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
“You are hereby guilty of killing Asisat Akande as preferred against you. You will be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May God have mercy on you,” Justice Ogunfowora declared.
The court affirmed that the evidence against Malomo was credible and tenable, leading to his conviction and sentencing.
