The government has pledged to finish the Abuja–Lagos expressway by 2027.
On Saturday, in Lagos, Minister of Works Dave Umahi told reporters that the projected 470-kilometer roadway will survive for 100 years.
He further said that the road will traverse through the states of Kogi, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Niger, Kwara, and the FCT, and that it would be built by a private sector partnership at no expense to the Federal Government.
He said, “When I first introduced this to the public, many doubting Thomases were saying, ‘it is impossible.'” It is impossible to travel from Abuja to Lagos in less than 14 hours. That is President Tinubu’s fresh optimism.
The President has given me permission to move quickly on this. Each of the two lanes in this project will be 14 meters in width and able to accommodate two-way traffic.
This highway will take four years to build, but will have a lifespan of 100 years. We are not contributing any kobo to the initiative, but rather providing guidance.
