As Nigeria approaches its Independence Day on Tuesday, October 1, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has expressed support for the planned nationwide protests, emphasising that the demonstration is within the rights of Nigerian citizens.
The protests, led by Nigerian youths, are in response to rising hunger and the economic challenges facing the country.
In a statement issued by the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, on behalf of its leader, Chief Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, Afenifere affirmed the constitutional right of citizens to protest peacefully.
“It is the right of the people to do so,” the statement read.
However, Afenifere urged protesters to ensure the demonstrations remain peaceful and devoid of looting, destruction of property, or harm to individuals.
The group also called on the federal government, led by President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to intensify efforts in critical areas such as security, agriculture, education, and the economy.
Afenifere emphasised the importance of improving existing infrastructure while also developing new projects to ease the economic burdens on citizens.
“State governments are also urged to do more in infrastructure and service delivery, particularly in those areas where there is no constitutional inhibition for them,” Afenifere added.
The statement further called on local governments to embrace their responsibilities, especially now that they have fiscal autonomy, to significantly improve the welfare of the people.
Afenifere also commended the resilience of Nigerians in the face of the country’s current economic and social challenges, expressing optimism for a brighter future.
Despite the ongoing difficulties, the group highlighted the importance of recognising the modest progress Nigeria has made since gaining independence.
As the nation prepares for both the Independence Day celebrations and the protests, Afenifere’s message is one of peaceful activism, urging citizens and the government alike to work towards a more secure and prosperous Nigeria.
