The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has officially passed a bill aimed at prohibiting the stigmatization and discrimination against individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
The bill also seeks to regulate the practice of HIV counselling and testing across the state.
This landmark decision followed the presentation of a detailed report by the House Committee on Health, which highlighted the importance of safeguarding the constitutional rights of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS.
According to the committee, the bill will play a crucial role in enhancing early detection of the virus and in reinforcing government-led public health awareness initiatives.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Hon. Udeme Otong, presided over the session and subsequently directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs. NsikakAbasi Orok, to communicate the Assembly’s resolution to the state governor, Umo Eno, for final assent.
In response to the bill’s passage, Dr. Enobong Akpan, the State Project Manager for the Akwa Ibom State Agency for the Control of AIDS (AKSACA), expressed his gratitude to all key stakeholders who contributed to the development and success of the legislation.
Dr. Akpan emphasised the significance of the new law, stating that it would create a more inclusive and supportive environment for people living with HIV/AIDS, while promoting their dignity and improving their overall quality of life.
“The anti-stigma law is a critical step in ensuring that individuals living with HIV/AIDS in Akwa Ibom are protected and empowered,” he said.
“This legislation will not only help reduce stigma but also promote early detection and proper care for those affected.”
Dr. Akpan further expressed optimism that Governor Umo Eno would swiftly sign the bill into law, noting the governor’s strong commitment to health and social welfare.
“As this bill is set to be forwarded to His Excellency the Governor for assent, we are confident that, given his passionate advocacy for health and well-being, he will act swiftly in endorsing this vital legislation,” he added.
The passage of this bill is expected to bolster public health efforts in the state, particularly in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS and protecting the rights of individuals living with the virus.
