The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it plans to forcibly take over the government of Rivers State, calling the claims ridiculous and baseless.
In a statement issued on Thursday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka said the PDP provided no justification for its allegations and instead misrepresented comments made by Chief Tony Okocha, chairman of the Rivers State APC Caretaker Committee.
Morka accused the PDP of ignoring the fundamental issues underlying the ongoing crisis in Rivers State.
Morka stressed that the current turmoil in Rivers State was orchestrated by Governor Sim Fubara, who he claimed has been usurping the legislative power of the state legislature and disregarding court decisions.
He accused the governor of expending public funds without proper legislative appropriation, thereby undermining democratic governance in the state.
“Governor Sim Fubara is the supreme architect of the horrific crisis rocking Rivers State,” Morka stated.
“Since assuming office, he has shown reckless disdain for the rule of law and democratic institutions, conducting his government in flagrant violation of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Morka further alleged that Governor Fubara declared the democratically elected Rivers State House of Assembly non-existent and illegally constituted a three-man assembly, violating constitutional provisions and the doctrine of separation of powers.
The APC called on the PDP to focus on educating Governor Fubara on democratic and constitutional governance for the benefit of the people of Rivers State, rather than spreading falsehoods about a non-existent plot to interfere with the state government.
