The FCT chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), on Wednesday elected 156 party officials across the six Area Councils during its ward congress in the territory.
The Chairman, Congress Committee of the FCT, Alhaji Abubakar Wurno, made this known in an interview on Wednesday in Abuja.
“Twenty-six candidates emerged winners in each ward across the six area councils during the just concluded ward APC ward congress in FCT.
“Those elected were the ward Chairmen, Deputy Chairmen, Assistant Deputy Chairmen, Secretaries, Organising Secretaries, Legal Advisers, Women Leaders and five delegates to the Local Government congress among others”.
He said that the congress committee provided a level playing ground for all aspirants before and during the election to ensure free, fair and credible election.
Wurno added that in each ward, election was conducted in the presence of security agencies, INEC officials and agents of all the contestants, in line with the party’s guideline.
He, however, said that election was not conducted in Kabusa and Wuse wards due to lack of agreement between aspirants in the areas.
“Therefore, the congress committee will conduct election in these two wards on April 10 to ensure justice and fair play”, he said.
He commended the APC members in the FCT for their peaceful conduct before, during and after the exercise, adding “this gives me impression that come 2015 the party will win elections in FCT”.
The chairman expressed optimism that APC nationwide local and state government congresses, scheduled for April 12 and 23 respectively, would be hitch-free.
“As I speak with you, nomination forms and electoral materials for the nationwide local and state government congresses are already being deployed across the 36 states of the federation”.
Wurno reiterated the determination of APC to respect democratic principles, promote internal party democracy, uphold rule of law, transparency and accountability in governance.
He advised other political parties to adopt solid values and ideology to strengthen the democratic process, stressing that they must be consistent, based on principle and philosophy guiding their operations. (NAN)
