On Thursday, the Court of Appeal in Abuja removed Dauda Lawal from his position as governor of Zamfara State.
The results of the governorship election that took place on March 18 were ruled inconclusive by the election officials. Lawal was elected to the position of governor.
In a unanimous decision, a panel of three Justices of the Court nullified and overturned the declaration that Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was the winner of the election.
After reading the lead opinion, Justice Sybil Nwaka Gbagiz issued an order that a new election be held in the Maradun Local Government Area of the State as well as in other places where polls were either canceled or did not take place at all.
The Court decided that the use of information from IREV to declare Lawal as governor in the absence of polling unit results was unlawful, illegal, and unconstitutional, and it reached that conclusion based on its interpretation of the legislation.
