Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has accused President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of desperation to retain power through what he described as political brigandage and subversion of democracy.
Atiku’s statement was in reaction to the recent political crises in Osun and Lagos states, which resulted in the death of one person in Osun and the invasion of the Lagos State House of Assembly by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police.
In a statement he personally signed, the former Vice President urged Nigerians to resist any attempts by Tinubu and his government to undermine democracy.

“Nigerians bore witness to a chilling display of lawlessness yesterday, as the Tinubu-led APC exposed the depths of its desperation to retain power at all costs—through sheer political brigandage and the subversion of democracy,” Atiku said.
He accused the APC of orchestrating an assault on the democratic process in Osun State by attempting to seize control of local government councils through violent means.
He alleged that armed thugs, operating under the protection of the ruling party, tried to take over all 30 local government secretariats while the APC national leadership and the presidency remained silent.
Atiku commended the people of Osun for resisting what he called an attack on democracy, stating that they had shown they would not allow their electoral rights to be stolen.
“We demand that security agencies deployed for Saturday’s elections uphold their constitutional duty with professionalism, refusing to be used as enforcers of the APC’s criminal agenda. The world is watching,” he said.
The former Vice President further alleged that the APC had abandoned any pretense of democratic legitimacy and was now resorting to brute force to cling to power.
He warned that Nigerians must remain vigilant, stressing that democracy must not be hijacked by what he described as a “power-drunk regime intent on setting the country on fire.”
“President Bola A. Tinubu and his dwindling band of enablers must cease their reckless acts of political sabotage, not just in Osun or Lagos, but across Nigeria.
The people demand governance, not chaos,” he declared.
Atiku’s statement comes amid growing political tensions in several states, with concerns rising over the conduct of security agencies and the ruling party’s handling of electoral matters.
