Samuel Ortom, a former governor of Benue State, has criticized the Assets Recovery Committee for towing his car on Governor Hyacinth Alia’s orders.
In a statement released by his media assistant Terver Akase, Ortom claimed that his vehicle and others being repaired were towed from a London Lines Transport Ltd.-run business along Otukpo Road in Makurdi on Tuesday.
He insisted that during his administration, the Benue State Executive Council gave him and his deputy permission to travel in their official vehicles.
“We are beyond shocked at the development which smacks of lawlessness,” Akase remarked. Following the event, a television program revealed that the state’s current administration was determined to torture, harass, and degrade the outgoing governor by any means necessary.
It was the height of lawlessness for members of the Assets Recovery Committee led by one Barrister Tom Uja to break into a factory today and tow away numerous vehicles, many of which did not belong to the former Governor. They were escorted by security personnel from Government House.
“It is the height of lawlessness for members of the Assets Recovery Committee, led by one Barrister Tom Uja, and supported by security officers from Government House, to invade a workshop today and haul away vehicles, many of which do not belong to the previous Governor.
Chief Ortom went to court after the current governor established the Assets Recovery Committee and singled him out for investigation.
It’s not the first time a former governor has left office with the government-issued cars that were provided for him, and His Excellency Ortom isn’t the last. Many of his predecessors, judges, and lawmakers, including the current governor’s chief of staff, Paul Biam, as well as the chairman of the Assets Recovery Committee, Hinga Biem, and other members of the committee, had already left office and taken the government-issued vehicles with them.
The current administration’s treatment of Ortom, a law-abiding individual who served as Governor of the state, is unjustified. Despite this latest provocation, he will uphold the rule of law, the statement promised.
