The tension generated in the South-South region over fears that President Muhammadu Buhari might discontinue the Amnesty Programme for ex-militants in the Niger Delta was doused Tuesday with the appointment of Brig.-Gen. P.T. Boroh (retd.) as the Coordinator of the Programme.
The office became vacant after the former coordinator of the programme, Kingsley Kuku’s tenure ended when ex-President Goodluck Jonathan handed over in May.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said Boroh’s appointment takes immediate effect.
It also said the former Commandant of the Nigerian Army Peacekeeping Centre would take over the responsibilities of Mr. Kuku, who aside being the coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, was Special Adviser to the former president on Niger Delta.
“The appointment of a new Coordinator for the Amnesty Programme is expected to lead to the speedy resolution of recent hitches in its implementation such as the non-payment of outstanding allowances to ex-militants”, Adesina said.
