A businesswoman, Woye Ella, on Tuesday, asked an FCT Customary Court in Garki, Abuja, to dissolve her marriage over an alleged attempt by her husband to set her on fire.
In her divorce petition, Ella accused her husband of violent behavior, claiming that he often overreacts to minor issues and has, on several occasions, chased her with dangerous objects, including a screwdriver and a knife.
“It got to a point that he poured petrol on me to set me on fire. It was my neighbors who saved my life that day,” she told the court.

She further stated that her husband was overpowered by neighbors and taken to a nearby police station, where he was detained for four days until his father intervened.
“When he was asked the reason for his actions, he couldn’t mention anything tangible,” she added.
Ella explained that she eventually moved out of their home for fear of being killed and asked the court to order her husband to vacate the property, which she claimed belongs to her.
“I bought the land and built the house myself,” she said.
The respondent, identified only as Joseph, a tiler, denied all allegations.
Presiding Judge Festus Enomhonse adjourned the case until February 24 for hearing.
