The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, has congratulated former Head of State and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon, on his 90th birthday.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday by the Director of Defence Information (DDI), Major General Tukur Gusau, Musa lauded Gowon’s pivotal role in promoting peace and unity during his tenure as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1966 to 1975, despite the challenges of the era.
The CDS commended Gowon’s exemplary service and leadership, describing them as leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history.
He noted that Gowon’s famous post-civil war declaration—”no victor, no vanquished”—remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s efforts toward national reconciliation and stability.
“As a detribalized Nigerian and peace ambassador, it is noteworthy that General Gowon has continued to contribute to humanity through his NGO, the Yakubu Gowon Foundation,” Musa stated.
He emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) recognize Gowon’s enduring legacy, which reflects his commitment to peace, discipline, patriotism, and the vision of a united Nigeria.
Musa added, “Gowon’s virtues continue to inspire generations of Nigerian military personnel and civilians alike.”
The CDS concluded by extending warm wishes to the elder statesman.
“As he celebrates this milestone, the AFN wishes him continued good health, happiness, and peace,” the statement read.
