ABUJA (National Sports Commission News) – Nigeria’s Sports Minister and Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Tammy Danagogo has called on all well meaning Nigerians, multi-national organisations and private companies to collaborate with the government in the development of sports through sports sponsorships.
The Minister made the call on Thursday April 10, 2014 in his office annex at the Abuja National Stadium when a delegation from Global Telecommunication (Globalcom) led by the Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel paid him a courtesy call.
Whilst lauding the giant steps of Globalcom in the sponsorship of football in the country, he noted that it has regularly contributed to enriching the social development spectrum of the Nigerian citizenry as sports is a veritable tool for engaging more people from different social and demographic strata.
He also canvassed for support from other private organizations, noting that the current trend worldwide is for private organizations to collaborate with the Government to develop sports since Government cannot do it alone.
According to him, sports offer a ready-made and flexible platform that can be adapted to a wide variety of objectives by companies seeking to develop successful Corporate Social Responsibility.
The Minister further urged the Multi-national Company to speed up its efforts at taking sports to the next level; pledging that the NSC will be evolving strategies to promote a greater collaboration with the Company.
Earlier in his remarks, the Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel stated that Globalcom has made football sponsorship their second business in Nigeria and will continue to be in the forefront in football sponsorship. He pointed out that as an integral part of the NSC, Globalcom is aware that football runs through the veins of Nigerians and to identify with Nigerians, have decided to go into football sponsorship which it has been doing since 2003.
He pledged the Company’s continued loyalty to the goals and aspirations of the National Sports Commission, saying the Company would soon unveil a blueprint aimed at garnering support for the national team as they prepare for the World Cup coming up in Brazil.
