Manchester United added David De Gea to their long injury list after the goalkeeper injured his knee in the warm-up ahead of Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Midtjylland in the Europa League.
He was replaced in the starting XI by Sergio Romero for the round-of-32, first-leg clash in Denmark.
Romero made a number of fine saves in his first United appearance since the defeat on penalties to Middlesbrough in the Capital One Cup, but he could not prevent a shocking result.
After the game, manager Louis van Gaal said the damage was to De Gea’s knee, but he could confirm the extent of the injury.
“Also a knee problem, so we have to wait and see,” he told BT Sport. “We have to investigate [on Friday] with a scan or something like that. We cannot answer now.”
United have been hit by a series of injuries in recent weeks.
The latest has seen them lose midfielder Marouane Fellaini after scans revealed a tear in his hamstring which is set to rule him out until the end of March.
On Wednesday, the Times reported striker Wayne Rooney could miss two months of the season with a knee ligament injury.
The club did not explain the forward’s absence, and Van Gaal confirmed he had a knee injury but would not say how long Rooney would be out.
Also among the Man United injured are Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young.
Adnan Januzaj is also hurt, but he was cup-tied while on loan at Dortmund and so would not be available on Thursday even if he were healthy.
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson missed Thursday’s game because of illness.
Louis van Gaal gave Donald Love his first start following his United debut as a substitute on Saturday. Paddy McNair, Memphis Depay and Ander Herrera also started as Van Gaal made four changes to the team who lost to Sunderland.
