CHAIRMAN, Northern States Governors’ Forum, NSGF, and Governor of Niger State, Dr Babangida Aliyu yesterday raised the alarm that some highly placed citizens in the state, including the opposition are plotting to destabilize the Nigerian state.
.
According to him, notable persons were using the recent ban on the operations of commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada to do their evil work.
.
A statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo in Abuja read: “The plot is being hatched by some highly placed individuals in the state, including the opposition. A protest is being organized by a group of key figures in the state. It is astounded at how petty some disgruntled politicians can sink by employing tricks to create the impression that things are not working.
.
“The government of Niger State condemns this cheap blackmail being used by the these disgruntled politicians who have lost out of the power game and are clutching at anything, including mere straws to remain relevant.”
.
The governor noted that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, government in the state acted responsibly and in the overriding interest of the public in banning the operation of commercial motorcyclists, adding that his administration would not repeal the law banning Okada in the state capital.
.
He said he was convinced that the advantages of the newly introduced tricycles far outweighed those of Okada, pointing out that no responsible government would sit and watch its citizens die in avoidable road crashes involving commercial motorcyclists.
.
“There is no need to politicise the issues on ground, because innocent Nigerlites, irrespective of their party affiliations, suffer greatly, with some, even losing their lives, often times when accidents involving motorcycles occur,” Aliyu added.
