Principals of secondary schools in Ekiti State have been cautioned to desist henceforth from the habit of collecting unauthorized fees and levies from the students or face the wrath of the government.
The state Deputy Governor, Dr. Kolapo Olusola gave the warning during his fact-finding visit to his alma mater, Annunciation School, Ikere-Ekiti recently.
He disclosed that parents and students have inundated the state governor, Dr. Ayodele Fayose with series of calls and text messages alleging that some principals were extorting students by inflating the approved fees and were collecting unauthorized levies from them.
Dr. Olusola described this as an unprogressive act which contradicts Fayose’s educational reform agenda which is to make education more accessible and affordable to all Ekiti children.
The deputy governor explained that Governor Fayose recently announced a reduction in the tuition fees of the Ekiti State University (EKSU) in order to relieve parents of the burden of high tuition fees place on them by the past administration, adding that government would not sit back and allow any greedy and unscrupulous people sabotage government’s effort.
Olusola who directed that henceforth, only fees and levies approved by the government as contained in the circular sent to all schools by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST) should be collected from students, however clarified that if there is going to be any additional charges based on the decision taken at the schools’
PTA meetings, school principals should write to notify MOEST and get official written approval from appropriate authority.
He told the Vice-Principals, teachers and other members of the school management to advise their principals and call them to order constructively whenever they felt the school heads are acting contrary to the government’s policy and ideology in education as they all have critical roles to play in the successful administration of schools
The deputy governor also urged school management to be prudent and make judicious use of whatever money accrues to their schools for projects that will benefit the students and not just for frivolous projects that contribute nothing to the students’ welfare.
Dr. Olusola assured that the Fayose led government would provide all necessary infrastructures and educational materials that would facilitate speedy restoration of education in the Fountain of Knowledge state.
While reiterating that Governor Fayose is determined make life more comfortable for teachers in Ekiti than their counterparts in other states, the deputy governor urged teachers to sustain their love and support for the government in its efforts to reposition education in Ekiti State.
