The Ekiti State Government has initiated the enforcement of the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing Law, 2016.
Retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, chairman of the Farmers/Herders Peace Committee in Ekiti State, made this announcement at a function on Wednesday.
Ogundana reiterated the government’s commitment to punishing any offenders who violate the law, emphasizing that this enforcement is crucial to curbing insecurity and preventing damage to farmlands in the state.
He warned that failure to resolve the issues between farmers and herders could lead to a food crisis for citizens.
Similarly, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Mr. Ebenezer Boluwade, affirmed the government’s dedication to achieving and sustaining food security.
He urged herders to guide their cattle properly and coexist peacefully with crop farmers, cautioning against the destruction of crops, farmlands, and properties by herders.
The anti-open grazing law prohibits cattle grazing at night, the carrying of firearms or offensive weapons by herdsmen, and the destruction of properties and farmlands by cattle.
The government’s enforcement of this law aims to promote peaceful coexistence and protect the interests of farmers and herders in Ekiti State.
