Former Vice President of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to remain calm following Tuesday’s bombings in different parts of country, during which several people lost their lives.
A suicide bomber blew himself up at a restaurant in Yobe State while the All Progressives Congress governorship rally in Okrika, Rivers State, was disrupted by gunshots and explosions, which left at least two people dead, including a policeman, and several others injured.
In a statement released by the Atiku Media Office on Wednesday, the former vice president pointed out that Nigeria’s democracy was on trial, adding that no matter what efforts were applied to the contrary, Nigerians should never give up their desire for change.
“Nigerian democracy can and must withstand terror”, Atiku said. “Whether the terror is from insurgents or from desperate politicians, in the end, democracy must prevail”.
The Turakin Adamawa called for a strong bipartisan signal or approach against those who are willing to sacrifice the nation for political gain.
“Our political elders must lift up their voices against violent desperados within their parties, and anyone found guilty should be punished severely and openly”.
Atiku also urged Nigerians to continue to remain vigilant especially around this election period, and to report any suspicious people or activities to the relevant authorities.
