The inauguration of the Abuja CNG conversion and training center, a pivotal milestone in Nigeria’s pursuit of a sustainable energy future, was overseen by Dr. Bayero Farah, Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT).
Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative Steering Committee, Zacch Adedeji, underlined the potential of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in alleviating transportation costs. He revealed that the government’s annual expenditure of $6 billion on petroleum imports has strained the country’s finances.
Adedeji remarked, “We find it puzzling that Nigeria has continued to rely on imported petrol for all vehicles and commercial transportation when we possess abundant natural gas that could power our vehicles at one-third of the cost, without depleting foreign exchange reserves. This transition to CNG could create jobs and opportunities for the nation.”
Adedeji further disclosed that Nigeria could save between $3 million and $5 billion in petroleum consumption over the next 3 to 5 years with the shift from Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) to CNG in the transportation sector.
He emphasized the country’s commitment to enabling businesses and individuals to participate in this energy transition. “We are opening this sector to everyone in the country. If you can establish a conversion center or import conversion kits, we will collaborate with you. Organize training programs, and we will support your efforts. We aim to involve banks and stakeholders in the sector to ensure a level-playing field, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the initiative,” Adedeji stated with optimism.
Michael Oluwagbemi, the Project Director of P-CNGi, stressed the significance of the event in advancing cleaner, cost-effective, and environmentally responsible energy solutions. He articulated that the decision to establish the P-CNGi-affiliated conversion center was a purposeful commitment to adopting cleaner and more cost-effective energy solutions, especially in a world facing environmental challenges and climate change.
Oluwagbemi stated, “In a world where the environment is crying out for help, where climate change is an undeniable reality, our decision to adopt CNG technology is not just commendable; it is essential. The commissioning of the Abuja P-CNGi Conversion Centre, the second of its kind after the Lagos State P-CNGi Conversion Centre, represents a profound shift in Nigeria’s approach to energy and transportation.”
The conversion of vehicles from Petrol Motor Spirit (PMS) to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Bi-Fuel at this facility signifies Nigeria’s commitment to mitigating climate change and ensuring sustainable economic growth. Oluwagbemi pointed out that the Presidential CNG Initiative is aligned with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing prudent resource management and a dedication to environmental well-being. This initiative offers a promising avenue for a greener and more prosperous Nigeria.
In conclusion, the inauguration of the Abuja CNG conversion and training center, under the stewardship of Dr. Bayero Farah, marks a significant stride toward a more sustainable and cost-effective energy future for Nigeria. Zacch Adedeji, Chairman of the Presidential CNG Initiative Steering Committee, underscored the potential for substantial savings and job creation through the transition to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in the transportation sector. Moreover, the commitment to involving businesses and individuals in this transition aligns with the vision of President Bola Tinubu. Michael Oluwagbemi, Project Director of P-CNGi, emphasized the importance of adopting cleaner and more environmentally conscious energy solutions in a world grappling with climate change, and the establishment of the conversion center represents a profound shift in Nigeria’s energy and transportation approach, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. This initiative holds the promise of a more environmentally sustainable and economically prosperous future for the nation.
