The Enugu State Government says it will henceforth commence the arrest and prosecution of street traders in the state capital.
The Commissioner for Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Mr Ikechukwu Ugwuegede, disclosed this to newsmen in Enugu on Friday.
Ugwuegede said that traders selling on the newly constructed walk ways would also be arrested.
The commissioner said the decision was aimed at maintaining the environment and existing infrastructure.
He said that goods seized from offenders would be confiscated and forfeited to the government.
“In accordance with the existing ban on street trading, we have commenced the arrest and prosecution of street traders and we are taking this seriously”, the commissioner said.
Ugwuegede, however, appealed to such traders to quit the act in order to avoid punishment, adding that relevant agencies had been equipped to bring them to book. (NAN)
