The Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, voiced his concern on Monday about the dismal state of the environment in most markets in Ekiti State.
He also criticized the poor maintenance culture among some market users.
During a meeting with the Ekiti chapter executives of the newly formed National Union of Market Traders Employers of Nigeria (NUMTEN) in his palace, the monarch particularly lamented the absence of basic amenities like toilets and water sources in the markets.
Represented by the Sasere of Ado-Ekiti, Chief Segun Famuagun, Oba Adejugbe commended the Federal Government for approving the establishment of the union.
He urged the union to advocate for improved sanitation in markets and ensure regular maintenance to guarantee a clean environment and protect people’s health.
He promised his support for the union’s operations and advised them to act in accordance with the rule of law and respect for human dignity.
In his address, Mr. Morakinyo Akintoye, the Ekiti State Chairman of NUMTEM, explained that the union was approved by the Federal Government to function under the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
He emphasized the union’s commitment to promoting orderliness in markets and improving the welfare of traders nationwide.
