Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has renamed the Maryam Abacha Auditorium in the Maryam Babangida National Centre for Women Development.
Maryam is the widow of former military dictator General Sani Abacha.
On Saturday, the first lady unveiled the newly renamed Maryam Hall, which was originally known as African Peace Mission Hall, in honour of her “strong advocacy for peace across the African continent.”
Mrs. Tinubu spoke at the event, and she referred to it as a watershed moment in the ongoing endeavour to bring women together and forge connections that would lead to lasting advancement and solidarity.
Mrs. Abacha was lauded as “a woman of remarkable character and unyielding dedication to the advancement of the Africa continent,” she said.
“Because of her efforts, a cabinet position for a woman was created in the Federal Ministry of Women’s Affairs.
The success of these women paved the way for them to be more widely recognised in society at large in Nigeria.
While speaking during the renaming ceremony for this facility, I underlined that “the unity among us is more important than our differences.”
This is a historic moment that will leave our country with a legacy of peace for generations to come.
It is crucial that we recognise and honour those people who played critical roles in furthering peace and stability on our path to harmony and prosperity.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), other speakers, including the Director-General of the centre, Mrs Asabe Bashire, and the Permanent Secretary in the women affairs ministry, Mrs Monilola Udoh, found inspiration in the first lady’s comments.
Mrs. Abacha spoke positively of the current administration led by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, expressing her hope that they will do well.
