In the wake of the Federal Government’s removal of the fuel subsidy six months ago, the anticipated respite for citizens remains elusive.
Despite promises of palliatives from both the Federal Government and various state governments, the economic strain persists.
Wage Awards and Pledges:
While the Federal Government introduced a N35,000 wage award, different state governments pledged sums ranging from N10,000 to N25,000.
However, the impact of the volatile exchange rate exacerbates the challenges faced by the common masses.
Unfulfilled Government Promises:
The government vowed to implement measures, including the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles, but citizens lament that none of these promises have materialized.
Transportation Woes:
Due to the skyrocketing cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, transportation fares have tripled nationwide.
Despite President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of a plan to invest N100 billion in acquiring CNG-powered buses, commuters still experience escalating transportation costs.
Taxi driver Jibila Audu emphasized that the persistently high fuel prices hinder drivers from making a profit, illustrating the adverse effects on citizens’ livelihoods.
Cash Transfer Program:
The promised cash transfer program, announced by the President on Independence Day, aimed at supporting vulnerable citizens, is yet to benefit the intended recipients.
Apolitical analyst expressed skepticism, questioning the effectiveness of the program amidst growing poverty levels.
Refinery Rehabilitation:
While the government assures that the Port Harcourt refinery will commence operations by December 2023, skepticism looms among Nigerians.
Many doubt the feasibility of this timeline, citing past unfulfilled promises and expressing concerns that even if operational, the refinery may not significantly impact fuel prices.
Citizens’ Hopeful Anticipation:
Some voices, including Comrade Jare Ajayi, urge Nigerians to remain hopeful, emphasizing the need for the government to meet its refinery deadline.
However, prevailing doubts persist, highlighting the prevailing frustration and skepticism among citizens.
