As part of its initiative to boost tourism during the festive season, the Government of Ghana has granted authorization for a Non Pre-Approval Visa on Arrival for tourists visiting the country from December 1, 2023, to January 15, 2024. This announcement was made through a circular issued by the Ghana Tourism Authority on November 22, 2023.
The circular highlights that the 46-day visa-on-arrival initiative is a key component of the “December in GH” campaign, which is part of the broader ten-year “Beyond the Return” initiative. In addition, it discloses that a letter from the Ghana Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, directed all airlines operating in the country to update their systems to accommodate this new arrangement.
Quoting the Ghana Tourism Authority circular, it states: “The Government of Ghana has authorized Non Pre-Approval Visa on Arrival for visitors coming to Ghana from December 1, 2023, to January 15, 2024. This pre-approval waiver is part of the December in GH campaign, a crucial element of the 10-year ‘Beyond the Return’ initiative. The visa-on-arrival program aims to facilitate and encourage increased arrivals to Ghana during the festive season, streamlining the visa process to attract more travelers keen on experiencing the unique cultural heritage, vibrant events, and festivals during the holiday season.”
It further elaborates on how this waiver aligns with the objectives of the “Beyond the Return” initiative, emphasizing its role in solidifying Ghana’s standing as the preferred destination for tourists and investors from the diaspora and beyond. The waiver is positioned as a means to deepen the bonds between Ghana and its global community while providing opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth.
The circular cites a letter from the Minister of Transport, Hon. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, urging airlines to update their systems to accommodate this new visa arrangement. The CEO of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Akwasi Agyeman, welcomes the waiver and encourages travelers to seize this remarkable opportunity, inviting them to be part of the December in GH program.
“December in Ghana,” launched in 2019, has consistently positioned Ghana as the official holiday destination, drawing diverse backgrounds and serving as a rallying point for the global African family to reconnect around arts and culture. The campaign encompasses a signature calendar of endorsed events, providing a guide for travelers planning their trips based on the activities they wish to attend. This calendar, curated by the Ghana Tourism Authority through the Beyond the Return Steering Committee, is eagerly anticipated as it shapes travel plans during the festive season.
