Mario Gotze will have to take a step down in his career if Borussia Dortmund lets him go, Lothar Matthaus has said.
Lothar revealed that it will be difficult for the German to find a top club after his spell with his current team.
According to him, Gotze has achieved a lot in his career but he is not a kind of player that is in demand so he will need to take a step down for his next contract.
He added that it will not only be a step-down club-wise, the ex Bayern player will also have to take a pay cut for his next team.
His words, “I can’t see him joining a top club.
“Mario has achieved so much and secured the World Cup for us [in 2014]. He had great years at Dortmund and also had his moments at Bayern. But you have to ask: Where is a type of player like Gotze in demand?
“He has to take a step down in his career, not just club-wise, but also in terms of salary.”
Gotze himself had this to say recently, “I can’t see him joining a top club.
“But for my active career, it was not that great, perhaps. The strong emotional response created huge expectations.
“It became lodged in people’s minds that I was the guy to score decisive goals in decisive games all the time. That was the assumption out there.”
