On Thursday, a hotel and other buildings in the Ajegunle/Araromi village of Makun, Sagamu Local Government Area, were razed by the government of Ogun State.
Locals reported that they were awakened by the shrieking of bulldozers under the watchful eye of the State Bureau of Lands and Survey.
Security for the government officials was reportedly supplied by armed policemen who stood by as bulldozers demolished buildings.
Residents complained that they were not given adequate warning before their homes were demolished.
Residents scrambled to evacuate their things as bulldozers swept through the neighborhood.
The homeowners claimed that the government sold their land to a Chinese corporation without compensating them for the loss.
Residents of the Ajegunle/Araromi neighborhood begged Governor Dapo Abiodun to spare them, saying, “We have nowhere to go.”
The community’s lawyer, Oduwole Olusoga, said that the residents “have a court injunction refraining the state government” from demolishing any homes in the region, and he questioned why the injunction was being disregarded.
When asked for his thoughts, Bureau of Lands and Survey Director General Segun Fowora remained silent.
Although, Fowora did say, “the government will address the press at the appropriate time.”
