A 54-year-old prophet of the Celestial Church of Christ, Eagle Parish, Yomi Adetula, was shot dead by unknown gunmen during a church service in the Odo Eran, Idiroko area of Ogun State.
The incident, which occurred at about 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, left the victim fatally injured as his head was severely damaged with an axe.
According to eyewitnesses, three assailants entered the church, drew a long double-barrel gun, and shot the victim before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, said the prophet’s lifeless body was discovered in a pool of blood, with his white Celestial garment soaked.
“Police officers arrived at the scene and found Yomi Adetula, male, aged 54, lying face up in his own blood. His body was riddled with bullets, and his head was mangled with an axe to ensure he was dead,” Odutola stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers specifically targeted Adetula, aimed at him with their weapon, and fired a fatal shot before using an axe to inflict additional injuries.
The Idiroko Divisional Police Officer ensured that the corpse was evacuated to the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro for further examination.
Odutola assured the public that investigations are underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the attack and to apprehend the suspects, who are believed to have escaped toward the border area.
The Ogun State Police Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to assist in bringing the culprits to justice.
