The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) in Lagos State, Mrs. Lola Akande has solicited the support of the members of the public to join hands with the government in eradicating human trafficking in the country.
Akande, who made the call while receiving delegates of the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) during a courtesy visit to the Ministry, said a collective effort, between the government and citizens, is essential in eradicating the dilemma of human trafficking from the country.
She disclosed the State Government’s readiness to work with NAPTIP and fashion out modalities to achieve the desired result, not only in Lagos State but Nigeria as a whole.
Earlier, Bar. Julie Okah-Donhi, the Director General of NAPTIP and leader of the visiting delegation, thanked the Ministry for its support of the Agency in the past, particularly its attendance and participation at the Agency’s recently organised Programme.
According to her, the team is in Lagos to engage major stakeholders and draw a new road map to stemming the tide of human trafficking in Nigeria, deepen the existing relationship as well as express appreciation to Lagos State Government and its good people for their support in the fight against human trafficking.
She added that Lagos, being one of the endemic States for trafficking, was a Source, Transit and Destination for various purposes because of its proximity to a number of borders and entry points.
Based on these reasons, Bar.Okah- Donhi solicited for the State’s support, through the Ministry, to NAPTIP especially in terms of essential logistics and operational needs such as vehicles, food and medical consumables, skill acquisition and educational empowerment for victims especially those of Lagos extraction and provision of Security.
She also expressed the need for the State government’s assistance in the area of shelter through the provision of a new facility or the relocation of the existing one along Ojodu /Berger axis. (LASG)
