On Tuesday, a pan-Ijaw group operating under the aegis of the Ijaw Nation Development Group, INDG, issued a warning to political actors participating in the alleged impeachment attempts of the Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.
The group said that the scheme might create a crisis and put both the state’s security and its progress at risk.
The alert was issued just one day after the Rivers State House of Assembly building was reportedly the target of an arson attack that resulted in the destruction of public property.
According to the INDG, the people of the Niger Delta region are concerned that President Fubara, who has only been in power for a total of five months, has become a target for a political coup. This is in addition to the fact that the attack that took place on Sunday night posed a threat to the peace and security of the state.
Prof. Prosper Ayawei, President of the INDG, spoke on behalf of the organization and issued an appeal for all parties involved, especially Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to exercise self-control and find a peaceful solution to any outstanding disagreements in order to prevent the state from disintegrating into anarchy.
According to his statements, “Rivers State, which had become a good example of where democracy works with exemplary infrastructural projects under former Governor Wike, should not be upturned into a festering sore of violent clashes due to ego and greed.”
“We are astounded that the political actors in Rivers State are working to undermine the progress that has been made in the state. As a result, we urge caution and a peaceful resolution of any concerns that may have contributed to the escalation of the crisis.
“We urge the stakeholders in Rivers State to stand firmly behind Gov. Fubara against any anti-democratic forces and peaceful settlement.”
The group also demanded that the Speaker and leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly rescind their decision to suspend the Majority Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie, and notice of impeachment to Fubara. They issued a warning that the Ijaw nation is watching the developments in Rivers and that they will not resist in order to protect the mandate that was given to the Governor, who is an Ijaw man. Edison Ehie was the man who was suspended.
