The Progressives League of Youth Voters has sounded the alarm that unguarded utterances by some older citizens is already generating tension in Imo State ahead of the governorship election on November 11.
On Wednesday, Audu Shuaibu, the group’s national coordinator, made this announcement at a news conference in Abuja.
The organisation claimed that a specific governor from the southeast, along with other members of the Labour Party, intended to invade Imo State in order to steal the governorship election.
According to Shuaibu, “As we are know, the Imo State Governorship election, along with Kogi and Bayelsa States, is rapidly approaching. While political actors in many regions of the country are prepared to do anything to win elections, men of good conscience will always take a position for peaceful voting. These are the influential people who have faith in Nigeria’s potential.
Tensions are rising in advance of the election in Imo State as a result of unguarded utterances made by certain elderly residents.
It was pointed out that the organisation shouldn’t sit back and do nothing while an elderly person from another state sows disorder in Imo.
It went on to say that these people are concerned about the future of Imo State because they are citizens of Nigeria first and foremost, before joining any political party or formidable support group whose interest is the development of Nigeria.
They requested that President Bola Tinubu warn regional leaders against making statements that could spark a conflict and against interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
In addition, it insisted that the decent people of Imo State should be given the opportunity to vote for anyone they want to lead them in the next elections for governor.
He warned that the Imolites’ opponents must not force the people to vote for a governor they don’t like.
If there is an attempt to impose something on Imo State or stir up political unrest, we will not stand for it. If the Labour Party tried to influence the gubernatorial elections, we would fight back just as hard.
