Northern Emirs and Chiefs on Thursday asked President Goodluck Jonathan and governors of the 19 northern states to implement the various reports on security in the region as a way of finding a lasting solution to the security challenges in some parts of the North.
Under the aegis of Northern Traditional Rulers Council, the traditional rulers noted that government’s inability to muster the political will to implement the various reports was responsible for the continued attacks on innocent people of the North.
In a communiqué after a one day meeting, signed by the Estu Nupe, Dr. Yahaya Abubakar, on behalf of the Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, the royal fathers expressed concern on the escalating activities of Boko Haram and cattle rustling in the region.
They vowed to intimate the president and northern governors with the non-implementation of the committees’ reports on the security situation in the North just as they condemned Wednesday’s bomb attack on the Federal College of Education, Kano, which led to the death of over 15 people.
The communique read, “The council condemned, in its entirety, the bomb blast that occurred at the Federal College of Education in Kano, which led to the loss of lives and property. It condoles the Kano Emirate Council, the Kano State Government, families of the victims and prayed for the repose of the departed souls and speedy recovery of the injured victims.
“The Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council under the Chairmanship of his, eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar lll, convened a meeting of the chairmen of states/FCT Council of Chiefs to deliberate on the persistent security challenges bedeviling the region, particularly the north-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa (states) and the economic stagnation of the North.
“After in-depth deliberations, the Council resolved as follows that the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council will support programmes and projects of governments at all levels capable of bringing about peace and economic reconstruction of the region.
